Research shows, the majority of infants and children under age 2 years once a bearer (carrier) pneumococcal bacteria (IPD) in their respiratory tract. Therefore, the newborn to toddlers age 2 years at high risk exposed to the IPD.
The most fatal when pneumococcal bacteria (IPD) attacked the brain. In cases of meningitis like this, death will strike only 17% of patients within 48 hours after being stricken with IPD. Even if declared cured of IPD, generally leaving a permanent disability such as hearing loss and nerve disorder which further brings out the motor disturbances, seizures without fever, mental retardation and paralysis.
A third of the usual bacteria cause meningitis (Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Haemophilus Influenzae type B, and Neisseria Meningitis), Streptococcus Pneumoniae is a bacterium that often strikes children under 2 years of age. Meningitis due to pneumococcal bacteria (IPD) this can cause death within 48 hours. When cured, however, often leaving a permanent disability.
IPD vaccination is believed to be the best protective measures given the current pneumococcal bacterial resistance to antibiotics is increasing. Because children under the age of 1 year has the highest risk of suffering from IPD, it is highly recommended that the granting of IPD immunization carried out as early as possible. Fortunately, the current pneumococcal vaccine has been found (IPD) for infants and children under 2 years of age.
Granting of IPD immunization in children age:
- 6 months: given < basis 3 times within 2 months, and a booster at age 12-15 months.
- 6-12 months: given a basis of 2 times, and a booster at age 12-15 months.
- 12 – 24 months: given the base 2 times, no need for booster.
- > 24 months: given 2 times.
- Prevenar, or PCV7, contains 7 serotype (4, 6B, 9V, 14, 18 c, 19F, 23F). IPD is safe vaccines administered since the baby was 2 months. The price is relatively expensive.
- Pneumo23, contains 23 serotype (1, 2, 3, 6B, 7F, 8, 9N, 9V, 10A, 11A, 12F, 14, 15B, 17F, 18 c, 19A, 19F, 20, 22F, 23F, and 33F). Pneumococcal vaccine is safe provided in children older than 2 years. The price is cheaper.
