Aspiration Pneumonia

Aspiration pneumonia (Aspiration pneumonia) is an infection of the lungs caused by inhaling substances into the respiratory tract.

Cause
Small particles from the mouth often get into the respiratory tract, but usually before entering into the lungs, will be issued by the normal defense mechanisms or causes inflammation or infection. If the particles can not be removed, it can cause pneumonia.

People who are weak, alcohol or drug intoxication or unconscious due to the influence of drugs or because of health conditions, are at risk to suffer from this type of pneumonia. Even normal people who inhale large amounts of vomited food can suffer from aspiration pneumonia.

Symptom

Chemical pneumonitis
Chemical pneumonitis occurs when inhaled substances that are toxic to the lungs, and the problems that will arise is more irritation than infection. The substances inhaled are usually stomach acid. That happened immediately was blown and increased heart rate. Other symptoms include fever, redness sputum and bluish skin due to lack of oxygenated blood (cyanosis).

To make a diagnosis performed chest film and measurement of oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations in arterial blood. Treatment consists of oxygen therapy and if necessary can be given a mechanical ventilator. Tracheal suctioning can be done to clear the airways and inhaled remove objects. To prevent infection, sometimes given antibiotics.

Usually patients can be cured chemical pneumonitis or will worsen into an acute respiratory distress syndrome or be a bacterial infection. Approximately 30-50% pernderita died.

Aspiration of bacteria
Aspiration of bacteria is a form of aspiration pneumonia most often occurs. This usually occurs because of bacteria ingested and get into the lungs.

Mechanical obstruction
Mechanical blockage of the respiratory tract can be caused by the inhalation of particles or foreign objects. Small children are at high risk because often insert objects into his mouth and swallow small toys or parts of toys. Obstruction can also occur in adults, especially if inhaled meat at meals. If objects clog the trachea, the patient can not breathe or speak. If the object is not removed soon the patient will soon die.

Heimlich maneuver performed to remove foreign objects and actions usually can save lives of patients. If a foreign object stuck in the lower part of the respiratory tract, irritating cough can occur with chronic and recurrent infections. Foreign objects usually issued by bronchoscopy (instrument inserted through the respiratory tract and foreign bodies removed).
